Print Design vs. Web Design

Hilligoss (2002) states that the basic elements for print documents is the page and the basic element for electronic document is it's screen. In print documents, readers usually read word by word but in electronic documents, the readers usually scan through the page and read the highlighted parts. Kress and Can Leeuwen (1998) said that readers have different ways of reading and it depends on the design of the page.

The Difference between Print Design and Web Design
1. Canvas vs Screen
A print designer rely on fonts, colors, paper and various other elements to reach their audiences while a web designer can use the same elements to reach more audiences. Computer comes in different sizes but the users can adjust the size of the browser according to their own preferences. The color on the monitor and contrast affects how the colors appears on the screen. Hamilton S (2012)

2. Navigation
In print, we flip pages in order to read further and go to the next page but in web it's all about the navigation. The appearance of links, visualization, and information is very important in order to make the website successful.

3. Typography
In print, the wide selections of fonts allows the designer to communicate the message in a more interesting manner. Free font sites allows them to achieve different fonts without relying on fonts that are on your computer without purchasing them. Hamilton S (2012)
There are many services available to remedy the typography constraints on the web. However, the web designers must use fonts that are easy to read on screen. Hamilton S (2012)

4. Images
The way an image appears on screen and on print is different. On the web, there are more chances for error to happen on it's image. With web, you can have animated images, mouse-over effects, pull down menus, cross-referencing links, instant feedback and many more. Hamilton S (2012)

The society has changed their way of getting information with the coming of the new media. The social media has become one of the top source where journalist gather their information in the new media. The social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter has become the top sources.

Sratmann J. (2011) said that since the social media has risen, the reporters and journalist do not gather much news but instead they gather the information from the social media where people share their information. People are able to use the social networking sites to post links to issues and stories and the issues will go viral on the internet.

Blogs and how they affect our community

Blogs are web logs that are updated regularly by the author themselves. Each blog contains information of different topics. Blogs are also used as diaries about people's personal lives, views, even social commentaries. It gives the author an opportunity to write unique information to you and your readers. Today, blog's are used for many different purposes. Some companies use blogs to communicate with the customers and other stake holders. Newspapers incorporate blogs to their website to offer their writers a new channel. Some individuals creates blog to share their interest and their expertise on specific topics. (Varlack J. 2009)

Blogging has become something very big in today's society. Blogging is a new form of journalism. Internet has given the chance to anyone to be a journalist today. Blogging does not help anyone to go all out in the mainstream media but it is also a source for people who are searching for reliable news. Bloggers and their blogs can help the community a lot by allowing them to hear what actually happened around us by reading different blogs and different opinions. An example of incident that happened around the world was the September 11 attack. Bloggers helped people to know about the actual story of what happened. More popular blogs have higher credibility for people to trust what they say in their post because of the experience people have while reading their blogs previously.
